INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From New York Times bestselling author Sally Hepworth comes a twisty tale of justice, redemption, and one irrepressible woman who’s not done breaking the rules just yet.

Meet Elsie Mabel Fitzpatrick: eighty-one years old, gloriously grumpy, fiercely independent, and never without a hot cup of tea—or a cutting remark. She minds her own business in her quiet Melbourne suburb, until a neighbor turns up dead and the whispers start flying.

Because Elsie hasn’t always been Elsie. Once upon a headline, she was Mad Mabel Waller—Australia’s youngest convicted murderer. But was she really mad, or just misunderstood? Either way, she’s kept her secret buried for decades.

Enter seven-year-old Persephone, a relentless little chatterbox who has just moved in across the road (armed with stickers, questions, and no sense of personal boundaries); Joan, who appears to have it in for Elsie; and a healthy dose of public interest—the cops are sniffing around, and the media is circling like seagulls at a picnic.

So Mabel does what she’s always done best—she takes matters into her own hands.

Is she a cantankerous old lady with a shady past? A cold-blooded killer with arthritis? Or just someone who’s finally ready to tell her side of the story?

Sharp, surprising, and wickedly funny, this is the unforgettable story of a woman who’s spent a lifetime being underestimated—and is about to prove everyone wrong. Again.

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this masterpiece! Mad Mabel is the literary equivalent of your town’s weirdest rumor coming true, and then some. Sally Hepworth serves up family drama, small-town whispers, and a woman so chaotic she makes your aunt’s Facebook posts look tame. It’s a slow burn at first, but once it picks up, you’re in for a wild, wine-worthy ride. Suspenseful, messy, and just the right amount of 'what did I just read? To sum it up, another absolute chef's kiss!

Erin H, Reviewer

Mad Mabel by Sally Hepworth starts out as a quirky novel about a cantankerous old lady named Elsie. She is “forcefully” befriended by her very young neighbor, Persephone. Some neighborhood events throw the story back in time to Elsie’s childhood, and the book swerves into a bit of a mystery delving into why Elsie was known as Mad Mabel. It’s not often that I equally enjoy the character storyline as well as the mystery storyline, but Mad Mabel was perfect in regard to both. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC!

Amy G, Reviewer

Mad Mabel is a wickedly clever mystery with heart, humor, and just the right dose of darkness. Elsie Mabel Fitzpatrick-grumpy, sharp, unforgettable-proves that the most dangerous people are often hiding in plain sight. When a curious little Girl moves in next door, long-buried secrets threaten to surface, and the suspense builds with every page. Sally Hepworth masterfully weaves past and present into a gripping, emotional ale full of unexpected twists. Equal parts charming and chilling, this book is impossible to Put down. An absolute must-read for fans of character-driven thrillers!

This was a little bit different from her normal books, but I have to say I loved it. The characters are so well developed and charming. The story overall was gripping. I really could not put this book down.

Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC. This will be one of the best I read this year. I love Sally Hepworth books and this one is one of the best. Full of all the things. Fantastic plot. Quirk. Humor. Seriousness. She’ is hands down one of the most brilliant writers out there. Five sold stars.

Trade Reviews

"A must-purchase for most collections. Not only will Hepworth’s many fans be clamoring for this, but it’s sure to grow her reader base." —Library Journal, starred review

"Hepworth balances heartbreak with Elsie’s delicious snark and strong suspense, but readers will be hard-pressed to resist feeling something here as allies emerge to defeat Elsie’s resigned loneliness. Arguably Hepworth’s best, this is a must-read for fans of Helene Tursten’s Elderly Lady series and Christopher Bollen’s Havoc (2024). " —Booklist, starred review

"Another entertaining Aussie cozy for readers of Liane Moriarty—and fans of tough old ladies everywhere." —Kirkus

"A twisty page-turning triumph, packed with wit, warmth, nuance and mystery. Brilliant." —Jane Harper

"Funny, twisty and suspenseful."—Harlan Coben
